Adding Privacy to Your Outdoor Rooms

The outdoor season is in full swing and now is the time to focus on making the most of our outdoor rooms. We are enjoying our recently improved space and only have a few details left to do.  I'm also helping a client add a little more privacy to her deck/porch.  While privacy isn't a must, it certainly helps to make a space more relaxing and intimate making us want to linger just a little longer. Adding an extra detail or two can serve as a nice noise barrier as well (for you or your neighbor).

This is one of my favorite porches!  The louvered shutter adds a nice architectural backdrop and creates a cozy place for visiting.

Here is another great example using a room divider which could also be made from shutters.  The layered plants help to add softness.

I'll be honest.  I've never been a fan of lattice, but in some cases it does help to add privacy without completely closing off an area.

And of course trellis/lattice covered in vines and layered with a mirror would be even better.

Shelves, palms, and curtains work together to create a beautiful  and private outdoor space in the image above.

When you can't plant a permanent tree or a vine, how about a series of containers to create a wall?

We added a pergola to our deck years ago and I was amazed how it instantly felt more private. Temporary canopies are a great solution if you want something less permanent.  I love the stripes on this one!

Have you been enjoying your outdoor space?
