Rethinking the Kitchen - Step 1

 By now, you have probably seen the work of designer Erika Powell.  I simply love her style.  All of my favorite designers share the same qualities.  They create traditional yet current, edited rooms you could live in.  "New House Timeless Character" was the article in the February issue of Southern Living where Erika turns a new home into a home filled with character and charm, and did I mention that I could live there?  In the March issue of Coastal Living, she puts her talents to work in two gorgeous kitchens. In walks green and blue.  Yes, I could live there too.

 

Hubs and I have have been discussing ways to update our kitchen to bring new colors and brighten things up a bit.  When I saw this issue of Coastal Living, I was inspired by the colors.  I've been babbling about blue and green for a while now, thanks for putting up with me, and Hubs and I thought the kitchen would be a good place to play with the colors.

Here is our plan in stages:

• Add beadboard to the butler's pantry.  We have enough paneling left from our previous project, so yay!

• Paint the inside of the cabinets robin's egg blue.   A quart of paint should do it.  The only thing that I wonder about, is should we paint the soffit white?  There is much talk about this lately and people seem to feel strongly one way or the other.  Not sure yet.
  

• Paint desk and cabinet white to match the rest of the cabinets.  We have the paint.

• Paint inside of cabinet robin's egg blue.

 

• Paint the banquette and chairs white (Mom, avert your eyes).  

Finally, simple window treatments for the window above the sink.

We have so many different elements going on in the kitchen and I believe painting everything white will make it more cohesive.  Plus the black granite and all of the black furniture makes everything look murky.  Following up with a touch of blue will add the zip that we are looking for.  The good news is the only thing we need to buy is a quart of paint..oh and a tiny bit of fabric.  Here is one that recently caught my eye, but I wonder if I should find something with black where you see brown to tie back to the granite.

 There is nothing like starting another project to avoid the ones you never finished....Sometimes I crack myself up.
