I'll be honest - mantel styling is hard. I see theme mantels and seasonal mantels all day long on the blogs. My mantel? Bore.to.the.ing. Over the weekend I decided to try once again to come up with something that wouldn't drive me crazy the minute I walk in the door.
Since we mounted the tv over the fireplace, I want to keep the decor simple and clean. I remembered a champagne bucket that Mom gave me years ago, tarnished and in the basement waiting to be discovered. I cleared the dust and camel crickets out of it and gave it a good polishing. My boxwood orb from J&S would be the perfect size I thought.
So far so good. Ball fits. Bucket adds much needed height. Now for the other side. Hmmm.
I reached for the ginger jar thinking it might be too big, too white, not enough contrast. Was pleasantly surprised that it fit and even though it did not provide great contrast - it is summer and white is refreshing. Could work for now. I can address contrast later in the fall when I once again obsess over what to do with the mantel. Now for some smaller items, maybe a pair of something, and another organic element. I recalled the pair of mercury glass vases my mother in law gave me for Christmas, currently sitting on the shelf in the bedroom. Maybe the blue and white jar, also from J&M filled with hydrangeas will be a good match for the other side.
Hmmm. Not quite right. Let's try switching the vases and the blue and white jar. Bingo. I think we have a winner.
OK one more thing. Let's add my sweet painting to the mix for a modern element and to break up the silver and mercury.
Perfect! I can live with this for a couple of months. Who am I kidding? This mantel will probably not change until the week before Christmas..or it might change 20 times, ha!
