The Shelves Are Up!

As promised, I have pictures to share of the new kitchen shelves.  The NFL tried its best to slow this project down, but the determined will prevail when it comes to DIY ;).  Sorry for the late post, but I was waiting for a little sun to shine in the kitchen.

In case you are stopping by for the first time or missed the post, here is what we started with - a cabinet minus doors until we could decide if open shelving was for us.  The cabinet is located directly over the dishwasher and is filled with dishes and glasses that we use every day.  This has made our lives so easy!  We loved it so much that we finally decided to take it to the next level with open shelving (besides, our cabinets were cheap & ugly).

We used these brackets from IKEA and pine boards from Lowes which were cut there, yay!   The brackets were primed and painted twice.  I used white satin spray paint.

I really wanted stained shelves to add some warmth to the room and to tie back to our old farm table.  I used special walnut stain and finished with a coat of polyurethane to seal it.

We wanted a clean finish on the shelf surface so we screwed up through the bottom of the brackets into the wood.  Notice how I use the word "we" ...obviously that isn't my hand ;).  This flexible screw driver attachment is my new favorite toy.  As a matter of fact, this project may not have been possible without it.
