Last night we celebrated two things, Mother's Day and our oldest son was confirmed. My parents came and brought their dogs, providing great entertainment for the co-editor. We went to church then came home to celebrate. I wanted most everything to be done so that we could enjoy the evening so I started early yesterday with cooking and table setting.
The roses in our garden have never been prettier and I have really enjoyed having a steady supply to fill vases around the house. The best time to cut flowers is in the early morning before they are dehydrated from a long day in the sun. Mr. CV helped me cut and arrange our New Dawn roses into julep cups.
Flowers are a dinner party must, but I also like to see everyone at the table so I try to keep the arrangements low. Julep cups are one of my favorite things to use for flowers.
We used the china that belonged to my grandmother.
We enjoyed a salad that I made from greens that I grew in containers with avacado, roasted corn, and radishes. The recipe came from Cooking Light and you can get it here.
We also had crab cakes with spicy remoulade with roasted new potatoes, also from Cooking Light which you can get here.
For dessert, we had ice cream, snickerdoodle cookies, and chocolate dipped strawberries.
By the end of the night, the girls were exhausted...well at least two of them were.
As I sit here in the quiet hours of the morning, I reflect on Mother's Day and what it means to me. My mother has been such a wonderful inspiration in my life. She has taught me to love unconditionally, to garden and to cook, to love birds and nature, and most of all to believe in myself even when it seemed unthinkable.
Happy Mother's Day to all mothers past and present who have touched our lives with love and grace.
